Is a heart attack hereditary?Heart attack, synonymous with Myocardial infarction is when a heart ceases to function due to its compromised blood supply. However the heart may stop functioning due to many causes like issues with kidney, infections, trauma/blood loss, lung problems.
Hereditary is a term that I’ll use when genetic issue is picked up from the family tree.Heart attack- heart ceasing to function can be due to any cause. Most of which are acquired; however a person can have a genetic condition that can cause heart attack. One of them being HOCM.
Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy. It’s a 100% genetic condition and one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac death in young/ athletes. They need dire medical attention ranging from drugs, to ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Device), or even a Cardiac Transplantation.
PS. Every disease has a genetic role. Cause the way our body reacts to various insults/damage such has smoking, alcohol is genetically controlled. That’s exactly why each and every individual reacts differently to different sort of risk factors. A non smoker can develop lung cancer and a smoker of 40 years can die a natural death. As simple as that, but Genetics as a whole isn’t that simple.
In case you’re worried about having a heart attack cause one of your family members died of a heart attack? (Whatever maybe the reason) The question is not really about heredity. Yes, you are at risk but you can reduce it by taking appropriate “cause-related” steps. I mean, if the person passed away due to Coronary Artery disease, you may take steps to steer away from it by simply making lifestyle changes, having health checks so that you can curb the progression at the early stages itself. It all comes down to how much of an effort you’re willing to make to take care of your health! Health matters the most! 🙂
Why are heart problems hereditary?
Heart problems could be structural defects that are because of genes or could be physiological defects that again is because of proteins and again genes. Another reason could be metabolic in which there is an error in how cholesterol is made and circulated again enzymes and this again are proteins that are synthesised from genes and hence genetic.
Not just heart, but even other disease could be hereditary but they dont cause that big a damage as heart does and so noticed.
•Question ❓
Is a heart attack hereditary? Why?
Heart disease is a general term for a condition of damaged/clogged blood vessels, abnormal formation of blood clots in blood vessels, or damage to the actual structural components of the heart (vessels, valves, etc). So, yes, in general heart disease or cardiovascular disease is caused by the buildup of plaque in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, which in turn is caused by the “risk factors” you mentioned; stress, smoking, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, poor diet, lack of exercise (poor cardiovascular health). High blood pressure and atherosclerosis can seriously damage your blood vessels, potentially leading to the formation of clots, which can then break off in your blood vessels, travel to the heart (called a heart attack), the brain (called a stroke) or the lungs (called a pulmonary embolism). So unless there is a specific structural malformation in the heart itself caused by a genetic abnormality or an injury, then in general heart disease is caused by these different
“risk factors”.
